Sally Yeh (葉蒨文) in Singapore

Went to Sally Yeh (葉蒨文)'s concert at the Suntec Convention Hall over the weekend. I must confess that I have never really followed Yeh's career, and was pleasantly surprised by her considerable vocal prowess, adroit handling of technically challenging numbers, and ability to build a rapport with her audience. Yes, even the notoriously passive Singapore audience that seems perennially glued to the bleachers. For her encore, she created a stir with an unannounced appearance among the audience, moving across the length of the hall, shaking hands with an ecstatic crowd, and handing out teddy bears (afterall, it was billed as a Valentine Day's concert). All while belting out Abba's Dancing Queen nary skipping a beat.

Here are some video clips I recorded with my handy Canon Ixus 40. I was seated pretty far away, but the sound is surprisingly clear.

Clip 1 瀟灑走一回 (30 seconds)

Clip 2 晚風 Pt 1 (30 seconds)

Clip 3 晚風 Pt2 (30 seconds)

As the concert drew to a close, she invited the audience to mount the stage with her, and led them in a rousing number that she first co-sang with Alex To (杜德偉), 信自己, before capping the evening with a stellar rendition of My Love Goodnite. Yeh is also one of the few HK artistes who is conversant in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin. However, few know that Yeh cannot read Chinese characters, and relys on romanized phonetics to help her read Cantonese and Chinese lyrics.

Here are some other pictures I managed to take. The last picture shows members of the audience on stage with her in her penultimate number for the evening.

I left impressed, and hope to see more of Yeh.

I'd be one of the first to agree wholeheartedly that she did extremely well for the Singapore concert!

As mentioned by Sojourneys, I'd never really followed her career notwithstanding my liking of her songs.

It was indeed a pleasant suprise to watch her splendid showmanship and her banter was something that was beyond my wildest imagination (given the impression I originally had of her, I never thought of her as a person with such an acute sense of humuor).

I must say I really enjoyed the concert and will definitely look forward to her next concert.

I managed to get hold of her "Now's My Prime concert" DVD and I would recommend that show to whoever who has not watched it.

I'm now trying to purchase the DVD of her other concert with the HKPO. Wonder if anyone's watched it before?

Apparently, most of the major CDs and DVDs stores do not carry much of Sally's titles. What a shame!

Hi Nixer, you managed to get a hold of her "Now's My Prime" concert DVD? Where? I was very curious about her collaboration with the HKPO, and after a futile search in our local record stores, ordered it from YesAsia.com.

Dear Nixer and sojourneys,

Yes, a couple of us went to Now's my prime and HKPO concert in HK. We bought both DVDs. I can say Now's My prime concert is superb concert i have ever watched! The feeling is so great! However, HKPO is "classy" musical night.

If you all want to watch, please email me wsj1106@hotmail.com or leave message to me at my handphone 94238213. THanks.

Hi saujun, nixer -- any idea where I can get the Now's My Prime DVD in Singapore? Her music seems rather difficult to get in Singapore, doesn't it.

Dear sojourneys, you can get China version's Now's My Prime concert DVD everywhere. LIke Caraffour. Or Visma CD Shop (nearby to Outram Park station, just next to Giordano). But i heard China version quality is not so good. Anyway, I really miss Now's my prime concert!~~~~~~~~~~

Hi Sojourneys and Saujun,

Firstly, to answer Sojourneys' most pressing question of where to find Sally's Now's My Prime Concert DVD, a friend of mine lent me his copy. :)

But I think his DVD was the China version, so the sound quality in the second disc wasn't all too ideal. However you can make do with it by turning up the volume!

Sojourneys, you should try to watch Sally's Now's My Prime concert soon! I've watched it over and over again... Its a whole new experience from the one we caught just last month.

I didn't watch her concert with the HKPO, but I managed to listen to the mp3s of that concert. I'm looking foward to watching it soon, albeit, still trying my best to get someone to buy it from Hong Kong for me.

Saujun, since you've watched both concerts, don't you think that her Singapore concert was somewhat similar to the one with the HKPO? I kinda had this feeling from listening to the songs sang during the HKPO concert, they somehow felt familiar (from the songs line-up to the fireworks segment) hahaha...

Finally, one thing to sum up our discussion thus far - YES, it's extremely difficult to find anything that's got to do with Sally (be it CDs or DVDs) and the best part of it all is when you actually enquire about any of Sally's titles, you can't help but notice the wierd stares from the counter staff at the local record stores.

Is Sally really a thing of the past? I doubt so! There aren't many singers/artistes these days that can measure up to these so-called 'outdated' singers!

Hi all,
Yes, the quality of china version Now's my prime concert disc 2 is not so good.

Singapore concert is combination of Now's my prime and HKPO. Except for opening medley, all other songs come from HKPO rundown. (In fact, it is very boring for us since we have watched so many times in HK, msia genting). However, I enjoyed Spore concert~~ the atmosphere is out of my expectation~~

Actually you can find my face in Now's my prime and HKPO DVD.

Sally will have her regular concert in Genting~~ 1 & 2 June tentatively.

If you guy want a copy of HKPO concert, please email me your address wsj1106@hotmail.com or sms me 94238213.

Hi Saujun,

Are you serious about the part about being on the concert DVDs? Which segment was that?

Also, how to intend to pass us the HKPO concert?

To respond to nixer's comment dated Mar 9, I don't think Sally Yeh is a thing of the past necessarily.

However, I think generally taste is a very fluid, and vary from milleu to milleu. Yeh has a very rich, melifluous voice that is a pleasure to listen to. The Canto and Mando of the eighties and early nineties emphasized melody. Songs today seem to underemphasize both, but instead the focus is on beat.

Having said that, I know of people in their teens who love Michael Jackson!
